Payslip privacy
Redact a payslip online
Payslips get requested constantly — rental applications, remortgages, loan checks, new-employer references — and they carry more identity data than almost any other document you share: your National Insurance number, payroll ID, tax code, home address, and full pay breakdown. Wolf PDF applies true redaction that removes the marked details from the file, so what you delete cannot be copied back out.
How it works
- 1Open Redact PDF — no account needed
- 2Upload the payslip PDF
- 3Mark NI number, payroll ID, and anything the recipient does not need
- 4Download and check the redacted copy
What is on a payslip that identity thieves want
A payslip plus a bank statement is close to a full identity kit. The details below are rarely needed by anyone checking your income, and they are the ones worth removing first.
- National Insurance number — needed by HMRC and employers, almost never by a landlord or lender
- Payroll or employee number — internal to your employer, useless to anyone else
- Home address — the recipient usually already has it from your application
- Deduction lines you would rather keep private, such as court orders, pension AVCs, or union fees
What usually has to stay visible
Most payslip requests are income checks. Redact around the income, not through it — a payslip with the salary blacked out defeats the purpose and gets rejected.
- Your name and the pay period — these prove the document is yours and current
- Employer name — confirms who pays you
- Gross and net pay for an affordability check
- If unsure, ask the recipient which fields they need before sending
Redact the copy, keep the original
Always work on a copy for sharing and keep the untouched payslip for your own records. If the payslip is a scan or photo, Wolf PDF erases the pixels inside each mark, so it works there too.
- Download creates a new redacted file; your original is unchanged
- Try selecting the redacted areas afterwards — nothing should copy
- Add a password if the shared copy still shows your salary
- Never change any figure on a payslip — redact, don't edit
Common questions
Straight answers on sharing payslips safely.
Can I redact my National Insurance number?
Yes, and for most sharing purposes you should. Landlords, letting agents, and most lenders do not need it. Keep it visible only when the recipient specifically requires it, such as some official processes.
Will a landlord accept a redacted payslip?
Generally yes, provided your name, employer, pay period, and pay amounts stay visible. Those are what an affordability check actually uses.
Is the redaction reversible?
No. Wolf PDF removes the text and image content inside each mark when it rebuilds the file. That is also why you should keep your own unredacted original.
Can I redact a photographed or scanned payslip?
Yes. On scanned pages the marked pixels are erased. Zoom in afterwards to confirm each mark fully covers the detail, including any faint or skewed text.
Is it legal to redact a payslip?
Redacting private details from your own payslip is legal and sensible. Altering figures or fabricating a payslip is fraud. Wolf PDF removes information; it is not for editing pay amounts.
What happens to my payslip after processing?
Files are deleted after processing, with anything left over cleared automatically within 30 minutes. Your payslip is used only for the redaction you requested.
