Bank statement redaction

Redact a bank statement online

Landlords, letting agents, mortgage brokers, and visa applications all ask for bank statements — and none of them need everything on the page. Wolf PDF applies true redaction: the text underneath each mark is permanently removed from the file, not just hidden behind a black box. Mark what should stay private, check every page, and download a copy that is actually safe to send.

How it works

  1. 1Open Redact PDF — no account needed
  2. 2Upload your bank statement PDF
  3. 3Mark account numbers, balances, and anything the recipient does not need
  4. 4Review every page, then download the redacted copy

Why a black box is not redaction

Most people "redact" a statement by drawing a black rectangle in a PDF editor or a screenshot app. That hides the text visually but leaves it inside the file — anyone can select the blacked-out line and copy your account number straight out. Wolf PDF uses proper PDF redaction that deletes the underlying text and image content in each marked area before the file is rebuilt.

  • Text under each mark is removed from the file, not covered
  • Redacted content cannot be selected, copied, or extracted
  • Image content inside marked areas is erased too, which matters for scanned statements
  • You download a new file — your original stays untouched

What to redact — it depends who is asking

Redact based on what the recipient genuinely needs. A letting agent checking affordability usually needs your name, the statement period, and incoming salary — not your full transaction history. A mortgage broker typically needs more left visible. When in doubt, ask the recipient what they need before you redact.

  • Almost always safe to redact: full account number and sort code (they repeat in the header of every page — check all of them)
  • Usually safe: individual transactions unrelated to the purpose, merchant names, other people's names in transfers
  • Often needs to stay visible: your name, address, statement period, salary credits, closing balance
  • Never alter figures — redacting is legal, editing amounts is fraud

Bank layouts differ — check every page

Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Santander, Monzo, and Starling all place account details differently, and most repeat the account number and sort code in the header or footer of every single page. Digital exports from app-based banks are usually clean text; older statements are often scans, which is exactly where copy-paste "hidden" text catches people out.

  • Check headers and footers on every page, not just page one
  • Watch for account details repeated in transaction reference lines
  • App-bank exports (Monzo, Starling) often include personalised summary blocks worth reviewing
  • For scanned statements, redaction erases the pixels in the marked area

Before you press send

Open the downloaded file and try to select the redacted areas — you should get nothing. Then decide whether the remaining content still needs a password before it goes into an email thread you do not control.

  • Try select-all and copy on the redacted PDF as a final check
  • Keep your unredacted original for your own records
  • Password-protect the file if it still shows balances or income
  • Compress large multi-month statement packs before emailing

Common questions

Straight answers about what redaction can and cannot do for bank statements.

Is the redacted text really removed, or just covered up?

Removed. Wolf PDF rebuilds the file with the marked text and image areas deleted, so redacted details cannot be selected, copied, or extracted. This is different from drawing a black shape over text, which leaves the data in the file.

Is it legal to redact my own bank statement?

Redacting your own statement to protect privacy is normal and legal for purposes like rental applications and loan reviews. What you must never do is change figures or add false information — that is fraud. Redact, don't edit.

Will a landlord or letting agent accept a redacted statement?

Usually yes, if the details they need — your name, dates, incoming salary, and often the closing balance — remain visible. If a recipient insists on an unredacted copy, that is their policy decision; ask them exactly what must stay visible.

Can I redact a scanned or photographed statement?

Yes. For scanned pages, redaction erases the image pixels inside each marked area. Zoom in and check each mark afterwards, since scans can have skewed or faint text near the edges of a mark.

Do I need an account or to pay?

No account is needed and free use covers everyday statements. Free files are limited to 50 pages and 50MB; Premium removes those limits.

What happens to my statement after I redact it?

Files are processed for your session and deleted after processing, with any leftovers automatically cleared within 30 minutes. Statements are never used for anything except the redaction you asked for.
